Most well-read, but non-scientific, people will have heard of the term ‘Big Bang’ as a description of the origin of the Universe. They will recognize that DNA identifies individuals and will know that the origin of life is one of the great unsolved scientific mysteries. This book brings together all of that material. Starting with the creation of space and time – known as the Big Bang – the book traces causally related steps through the formation of matter, of stars and planets, the Earth itself, the evolution of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere, and then through to the beginnings of life and the evolution of man. The material is presented in such a way that an intelligent non-scientist can comprehend it, without using formulae or equations but still preserving the integrity of the involved science. This book does not solve the mysteries of what initiated the Big Bang or how life evolved from inanimate matter, but it does make clear the nature of those problems. The reader will be left with a sense of wonderment that he or she actually exists!

Book Description:

Biological anthropologists face an array of ethical issues as they engage in fieldwork around the world. In this volume human biologists, geneticists, paleontologists, and primatologists confront their involvement with, and obligations to, their research subjects, their discipline, society, and the environment. Those working with human populations explore such issues as who speaks for a group, community consultation and group consent, the relationship between expatriate communities and the community of origin, and disclosing the identity of both individuals and communities. Those working with skeletal remains discuss issues that include access to and ownership of fossil material. Primatologists are concerned about the well-being of their subjects in laboratory and captive situations, and must address yet another set of issues regarding endangered animal populations and conservation in field situations. The first comprehensive account of the ethical issues facing! biological anthropologists today, Biological Anthropology and Ethics opens the door for discussions of ethical issues in professional life.

Lucky Luke Comics In Serbian(talicni Tom)

Lucky Luke

Lucky Luke Comics In Serbian(talicni Tom)

Lucky Luke is a Franco-Belgian comics series created by Morris, and over period written by René Goscinny. Set in the American Old West, it stars the titular character, Lucky Luke, the cowboy known to shoot faster than his shadow.

Along with The Adventures of Tintin and Asterix, Lucky Luke is one of the most popular and best-selling comic-book series in continental Europe, but unlike Tintin and Astérix, despite its popularity in Canada, only a handful of the series’ adventures have been translated into English.

Publication history
First appearance of Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper in Arizona 1880 (1946)
First appearance of Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper in Arizona 1880 (1946)

Both a tribute to the mythic Old West and an affectionate parody, the comics were drawn by the Belgian artist Morris who drew Lucky Luke from 1946 until his death in 2001. The first Lucky Luke adventure named Arizona 1880 appeared in the Almanach issue of the comics magazine Le Journal de Spirou on December 7, 1946. After several years of solitary work the strip, Morris began a collaboration with Rene Goscinny who became the series’ scenarist for a period that is considered the golden age of the series. This started with the story Des rails sur la prairie published on August 25, 1955 in Spirou. Ending a long run of serial publications in Spirou, the series shifted to Goscinny’s magazine Pilote in 1967 with the story Les cousins Dalton, subsequently leaving publisher Dupuis for Dargaud.

After the death of Goscinny in 1977, several scenarists have tried to fill the role of storyteller the Lucky Luke tradition, such as Vicq, Bob de Groot, Jean Léturgie and Lo Hartog Van Banda. In addition to continuing the series, Morris started the related spin-off series Rantanplan in 1987. At the 1993 Angoulême International Comics Festival, Lucky Luke was given an honorary exhibition.

After Morris’ death in 2001, French artist Achdé continued drawing new Lucky Luke stories in collaboration with writer Laurent Gerra.

Plot summary

Luke, drawing a gun faster than his shadow, fights crime and injustice, most often in the form of the bumbling Dalton brothers, Joe, William, Jack and Averell (each one being taller and dumber than the previous one). He rides Jolly Jumper, “the smartest horse in the world”. He is often seen with Rantanplan, “the stupidest dog in the universe”, whose name is a reference to Rin Tin Tin. A cigarette was constantly on Lucky Luke’s lips in the early stories, but in 1983, in reponse to the growing anti-smoking campaign, Morris replaced the cigarette with a piece of straw, which earned him recognition from the World Health Organization.

In the albums, Luke meets many factual Western figures like Calamity Jane, Billy the Kid, Judge Roy Bean and Jesse James’s gang, and takes part in historical endeavors such as guarding of Wells Fargo stagecoaches, the Pony Express, the building of the first transcontinental telegraph, and the Rush into the Unassigned Lands of Oklahoma.

At the end of each story, except the earliest, Lucky Luke rides off alone into the sunset, singing (in English) “I’m a poor lonesome cowboy, and a long way from home…”.

Lyme Borreliosis: Biological and Clinical Aspects
Publisher: S. Karger AG | Language: English | ISBN:3805591144 | 212 pages | Data: 2009 | PDF | 6 Mb

Description: ‘Lyme disease’, so called since Steere et al. inquired into an arthritis epidemic among young children in the community of Old Lyme, Conn., USA, in the late 1970s, has a very long European history. Its cutaneous manifestations, the most frequent signs of the disease, had already been described at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century by physicians like Buchwald, Pick, Herxheimer, Hartman,
Afzelius and Lipschutz . Additionally, two French physicians in a landmark
paper published in 1922, Garin and Bujadoux , reported a patient who developed erythema chronicum migrans followed by painful meningoradiculitis. Shortly before the symptoms began, this patient was bitten by a tick and he had a positive Bordet-Wasserman test, which was used at this time to diagnose syphilis. They stated, however, that although this test was positive, this patient did not have syphilis, and concluded that this patient had a tick-borne disease that induced cutaneous and neurological manifestations caused by a spirochete different from Treponema pallidum .
It was not until the early 1980s that their prediction proved to be correct, when Burgdorfer et al. were able to isolate a bacterium belonging to the family of Spirochaetaceae, first from ticks and then from humans. Interestingly, the first North American observation of Lyme disease, a patient with erythema migrans, was only published in 1970

By Chris “the most passionate music/film fan alive.” (Philly suburbs, PA) – See all my reviews
This book is fantastic. The two CDs it comes with are great, too. Not all exercises are on the CDs… but there are a TON of exercises to work on. The author covers many, many styles.. classical, folk, “jangle”, blues, rock, etc.. arpeggios, jangle sequences, fingerpicking, scale practice, chords, altered tunings..

You can’t find a better book on acoustic guitar instruction. I LOVE the stuff put out by Backbeat Books… they’re ALWAYS of the highest quality, and the most practical AND fun…. and here’s yet another book that cites the Smiths as a reference with a certain style/sound. The Smiths (and especially Johnny Marr’s work within the band)… that’s great guitar, there.

Do yourself a favor and pick this up. The title’s generic, I know… but when they say Play Acoustic, they mean it.

If you play piano, too… you can do no better than the Piano Handbook (same publisher, same spiral-bound book, same look and layout). A great find.
