Radiohead – The Best Of (2008)
FLAC/ MP3 cbr 320 | 492/ 140 MB

AMG review by Andy Kellman:
The year 2008 might have been a slightly early point in time to release expanded editions of the first several Radiohead albums, so Capitol greased the reissue pipeline with The Best Of, a 17-track disc with a track list that is as debatable as any other. The idea of squeezing the band’s first six albums into something resembling a definitive one-disc introduction seems almost as wise as presenting A Collection of Great Dance Songs (incidentally a Capitol release) as the one true and useful introduction to Pink Floyd, but to be more fair, the disc does cover just about all of the basics: all the singles and emphasis tracks, from Pablo Honey’s “Creep” through Hail to the Thief’s “2+2=5,” along with a small assortment of the band’s better-known album cuts. One track apiece comes from Pablo Honey (1993) and Amnesiac (2001); three are from Kid A (2000), four are from OK Computer (1997), and six are off The Bends (1995). The primary problem, of course, is that Radiohead are much more an albums band than a singles band, especially from OK Computer onward, so a natural reflex for someone who has valued the band since The Bends is to shriek in mild agony; in principle, a best-of Radiohead compilation is similar to a DVD containing somewhat thoughtfully picked scenes from films made by a specific director. For a very casual fan who has absolutely no interest in exploring beyond the songs he or she heard on the radio or through MTV and the like, this set will do (it has “Creep” and half of The Bends, after all, and then a bunch of “the weird stuff”), but otherwise it clearly serves a purpose more meaningful for the label than anyone else.

Napalm Death – Harmony Corruption

This record marked Napalm’s Death transition from a pioneer Grincore masters to a not-so-standard Death Metal 5-piece.
Napalm Death – Harmony Corruption

It is an important record because the band faced many inward – and outward pressures.

Napalm Death’s classic line-up had just collapsed. Lee Dorian went on the form doomsters Cathedral. The joke at the time was that Dorian went from the fastest to the slowest band in the world. Bill Steer decided to stick with his original band, Carcass (he joined Napalm Death when Justin Broadrick exited to form Godflesh). It was good that he quit the band, because Napalm’s songwriting was suffering. Just compare the “Mentally Murdered” EP with Carcass’es “Symphonies of Sickness”, released on the same year (1989). The impression you get is that Steer’s best songs went straight to Carcass.

So, the surving members, Mick Harris and Shane Embury, went on to recruit top talent from the scene. Jesse Pintado, from the defunct Terrorizer, coupled with Mitch Harris, from Righteous Pigs, two of the best Grindcore guitar players America had to offer. The third recruit, “Barney” Greenway, came straight from UK Death Metal upstarts Benediction. With this “stellar” – undergroundwise – new line-up, they released the controversial “Harmony Corruption” (1990).

Track Listing:
1. Vision Conquest
2. If The Truth Be Known
3. Inner Incineration
4. Malicious Intent
5. Unfit Earth
6. Circle Of Hypocrisy
7. The Chains That Bind

Eddie Hinton – Very Extremely Dangerous (flac_lossless)

Eddie Hinton - Very Extremely Dangerous (flac_lossless)

In his book Sweet Soul Music, Peter Guralnick described Eddie Hinton as “the last of the great white soul singers,” and his debut album, 1978′s Very Extremely Dangerous, sounds like a glorious throwback to the salad days of the Muscle Shoals, AL, R&B hit factory of the 1960s, where Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin cut some of their most memorable songs. Hinton had already earned an estimable reputation as a session guitarist by the time he finally got to step up to the mic as a solo artist, and Very Extremely Dangerous features him backed up by the always-expert Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and Hinton’s strong and wiry guitar runs fit the group’s emphatic support like a glove. (Hinton and his friends also knew how to bring a solid rock drive to these songs without losing their soulful groove in the process.) As a singer, Hinton was never afraid to step on the gas, and if his vocals are sometimes a bit over the top, they’re also consumed with a raw and sweaty joy; like Wilson Pickett, Hinton is able to bring a surprising musicality to a shouting style that can express the pleasures of a hard-partying Saturday night (“Shout Bamalama”) as well as the tender agony of love (“I Got the Feeling”). It was Eddie Hinton’s poor fortune to cut a great blue-eyed soul album just as disco and funk had bumped deep soul off the charts, but Very Extremely Dangerous still stands as a fine example of latter-day soul at its most accomplished.

Track list:

1. You Got Me Singing
2. Concept World
3. I Got the Feeling
4. Shout Bamalama
5. Get off in It
6. Brand New Man
7. Shoot the Moon
8. We Got It

Genre: Technical post-thrash

Quality: CBR@320kbps + FLAC + .iso
Label: Nuclear Blast
Official:

Description:
The new version features the rhythm guitar tracks re-recorded with new guitars and amplifiers. The guitar tracks on the original Nothing were recorded with detuned 7-string Ibanez guitars, as the Nevborn custom 8-string guitars they owned suffered from bad intonation and became detuned between each recording. When guitarists Hagström and Thordendal were sponsored by Ibanez with custom 8-string guitars, they were so pleased with the results that they decided to re-record their parts with the new instruments. The drums were also re-recorded by triggering the original drum hits using Drumkit from Hell Superior. The vocals were not re-recorded, but were given extra dramatic effects.

Aside from the re-recorded guitars and triggered drum samples, there are only two songs significantly modified from their original version. The tempo of “Nebulous” has been lowered, and the length of “Obsidian” has nearly been doubled, the heavy riff beginning at 3:08 and changing tempo at around 5:30. Also the rest of the songs from the re-release seem to be minimally longer than the original release.

- Release Notes ————————————————————- -

Like a box of chocolate truffles with BBs hidden in them, a Housemartins
album offers deceivingly simple and tuneful pop songs that are designed to
cause you some discomfort once you start chewing on them. Singer and
songwriter Paul Heaton sings with a disarmingly boyish voice, high and
adenoidal, and his bandmates contribute angelic harmonies as well as sweet
and straightforward guitar pop instrumental settings. But listen closely to
Heaton’s lyrics and you find yourself plunged into a world of class
resentment, bitter economic disappointment, and strangled rage. “Get Up Off
Our Knees” includes the deathless couplet “Don’t point your fingers at them
and turn to walk away/Don’t shoot someone tomorrow that you can shoot today,”
while “Sitting on a Fence” ridicules those who “see both sides of both sides”
and “Sheep” bemoans the apathy of the downtrodden masses. Heaton is no simple
lefty ù his politics are a strange amalgam of Marxism and Christianity ù but
his views are brutally uncompromising, and they constitute a very iron fist
wrapped in the velvet glove of the Housemartins’ blissful guitar pop. Agree
with him or not, there’s no denying the music’s power.
